Programme Associate, Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), NextGen Network

Manu is a climate and energy expert and works on the efficient allocation of risks and well-functioning markets to drive the energy transition. He has a keen interest in leveraging actuarial and risk science, and big data techniques, including artificial intelligence, to improve governance and deepen markets. His current research interests lie at the intersection of development policy, finance, technology, and institutions. At CEEW, Manu’s work involves designing market-transformative insurance products, restructuring regulatory and commercial contracts, and electricity markets to de-risk and advance renewables. He has singlehandedly designed a prototype of one of its kind Grid Integration Guarantee, an innovative insurance instrument to mitigate the curtailment risk, using data generated in the power system in the state of Gujarat in India. He is currently assessing risks in emerging economies in Asia and Africa, and developing means of advancing regulatory ease in the renewable energy sector. Manu closely monitors the non-UNFCCC negotiations on emissions due to international transport and leads CEEW’s work on international aviation emissions. He also closely monitors Indo-US energy and climate diplomacy, and frequently participates in Indo-US Track II and 1.5 dialogues. Manu has been actively involved with the Women in Sustainability initiative at CEEW since its inception.
