Citizen Artists

The Aspen Institute Arts Program has defined “Citizen Artists” as:

Individuals who reimagine the traditional notions of art-making, and who contribute to society either through the transformative power of their artistic abilities, or through proactive social engagement with the arts in realms including education, community building, diplomacy and healthcare.

There should be no dividing line between artistic excellence and social consciousness.
— Joseph W. Polisi, president of Juilliard, The Artist as Citizen

In the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Citizen Artists challenge is committed to access for all to engage in and reap the benefits of culture, and encompasses a global creative coalition furthering the impact of the arts for all. Citizen artistry and musicianship, largely founded in the ideals of empathetic connections between artists and communities, as well as inspiration, imagination and transformation.
