AFFIRM – the American Foundation for the Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine
The Aspen Institute’s Health, Medicine & Society program is proud to announce its acquisition of the American Foundation for the Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine (AFFIRM), the country’s leading organization dedicated to ending the nation’s firearm injury epidemic using a public health approach. Since its founding in 2017 by two emergency physicians and using evidence-based research, AFFIRM has gained a national reputation as a highly effective neutral convener and collaborator on the challenge of gun violence. Across the country, AFFIRM uniquely brings together health systems, community stakeholders, and firearms experts and owners, all committed to reducing firearm suicide, domestic violence, and homicide.
Firearm injury transcends class, race, geography, and political affiliation. AFFIRM at the Aspen Institute will assemble the best ideas for preventing firearm injury into one hub, workshop them to solicit diverse perspectives and reach consensus, and provide support for implementing effective strategies through convenings and distributive leadership – all with the goal of helping to end the epidemic of gun violence and reduce firearm injuries and deaths.
