High Seas Initiative
The High Seas Initiative is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program that will ignite global awareness of the need to explore, understand and protect the last unregulated global commons: the remote ocean. Countries’ exclusive jurisdiction over maritime areas ends 200 miles from shore in most cases, leaving activity in nearly two-thirds of the ocean—43 percent of the surface of our planet—largely without oversight. This initiative will support the creation, expansion, and enforcement of marine reserves; harness technologies for exploration and marine surveillance; and educate and engage youth to become future leaders working on behalf of our ocean.
