Aspen New York Book Series Presents “The Art of the Essay”
On Thursday, May 14th, the Aspen New York Book Series will feature authors Meghan Daum, Phillip Lopate, and Clifford Thompson on “The Art of the Essay.”
Meghan Daum is an author, essayist and editor. She has been a columnist for The Los Angeles Times since 2005, and has written for numerous magazines, including The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, and Vogue. She is the author of four books, most recently the collection of original essays “The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion.” She was recently named a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and she is an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.
Phillip Lopate is an essayist, fiction writer, poet, film critic and teacher. Among his many publications include three personal essay collections, two novels, three poetry collections, three novellas and a memoir of his teaching experiences. His writing has appeared in periodicals and anthologies including “The Best American Short Stories,” “The Best American Essays,” several Pushcart Prize annuals, The Paris Review, Esquire, Film Comment, The Threepenny Review, The New York Times, Harvard Educational Review, and Preservation. He has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a New York Public Library Center for Scholars and Writers Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts grants, and two New York Foundation for the Arts grants. His most recent collection of essays “Portraits Inside My Head: Essays” was published in 2013. He is currently the director of Columbia University’s graduate non-fiction program.
Clifford Thompson received a Whiting Writers’ Award for nonfiction in 2013 for “Love for Sale and Other Essays.” His essays on books, film, jazz, and American identity have appeared in publications including The Threepenny Review, The Iowa Review, Oxford American, The Los Angeles Review of Books, and Black Issues Book Review. He served as the editor of Current Biography, and he has held adjunct professorships at Columbia University and New York University. His memoir, “Twin of Blackness,” will be released in July.
