The New Nuclear Challenge Forum
OVERVIEW
The New Nuclear Challenge Forum addressed topics such as The Future of Nuclear Power, International Reactions to Fukushima, Managing the Spread of Nuclear Threats, and The New Framework for Civil Nuclear Cooperation and to strengthen the transatlantic dialogue and public discourse in Central Europe. Experts, government officials and high-profile personalities from both sides of the Atlantic converged to address these important topics.
Some highlights from the Forum included an opening presentation from the Japanese Ambassador to the United States, Ichiro Fujisaki, describing Japan post-Fukushima and its energy plans going forward. Anne Lauvergeon, the former CEO of Areva, gave a compelling interview with the Aspen Institute’s Elliot Gerson, where they discussed her thoughts on the future of nuclear in France and Europe in general, the importance of safety standards, and how diversifying energy supply is crucial for all countries. Lord Peter Mandelson provided a compelling keynote address where he warned that European leaders should not be hasty in their decisions regarding the Eurozone crises, as some have been with their nuclear positions post-Fukushima.
