Aspen Wye Fellows: Transforming the University: Learning for Change

Open to Aspen Wye Fellows only. Society of Fellows members are also welcome to attend.

What happens when you cross a jazz performer with a music professor/composer with a revolutionary college president? Dr. Jose’ Antonio Bowen, the President of Goucher College, is the result — one of the most transformational educators in the world.

Dr. Bowen holds four degrees from Stanford University — a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, a Master of Arts in music composition, a Master of Arts in humanities, and a joint Ph.D. in musicology and humanities. He has taught jazz, music, performing arts and composition at the University of Southhampton, England; Stanford University, Georgetown University, Miami University and Southern Methodist University. He has performed for some 35 years with jazz icons including Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck and Liberace, and has recorded  with the Jose’ Bowen Quartet and written widely on musical topics. A symphony he composed was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Music.

Bowen is also a pioneer in active learning and the use of technology in the classroom. His books — “Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology Out of Your College Classroom Will Improve Student Learning” and “Transforming the University: Learning for Change” — are revolutionizing how teachers think about education. Bowen also has a TED talk on Beethoven as Bill Gates. Don’t miss this “Renaissance Man” discussing a new approach to educating today’s youth.
