The nonprofit AVID Center proposes to replicate its proven college and career readiness system in underserved communities throughout the United States. The AVID system embeds trained teachers and administrators in a school’s infrastructure to engage struggling but capable students in rigorous learning and to create a sustainable schoolwide impact. The project design includes development of AVID model programs in regional networks of elementary and secondary school sites that would generate schoolwide and district-wide shifts to strong college-going, achievement-driven cultures.
AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination is a systemic instructional program designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges and succeed in postsecondary education and training. AVID is a proven, effective way to increase the likelihood that a young person who comes from a low-income family will graduate from high school and go on to enroll in, and complete, a four-year college degree program. Over 98% of AVID high school seniors graduate from high school and over 76% are accepted to four-year colleges – consistently.
Over 30 years, AVID has successfully built and sustained a vertical-articulation system that reaches from elementary school through postsecondary education. Schools and districts have taken methodologies and strategies from the AVID elective course and have implemented them schoolwide and district-wide to impact entire communities. The AVID system has been successfully replicated in more than 4,500 schools serving approximately 400,000 students.
