On Tuesday, October 1, 2013, The Aspen Institute on Financial Security (Aspen IFS) hosted a conversation at the Aspen Institutes headquarters entitled “The Other Side of the Fiscal Coin: Social Security’s Overlooked Multiplier.” The conversation coincided with the release of a new AARP report, Social Security’s Impact on the National Economy, which examined how Social Security contributes to both the national economy and the economy of individual states.

David Wessel, economics editor and columnist for The Wall Street Journal, moderated the conversation between a bipartisan group of economists, consumer advocates, and the media. Participants reacted to AARP’s report and discussed Social Security’s contributions to the nation’s economic prosperity.
