Statement on Hate Crime at Tree of Life Synagogue

October 27, 2018  • Daniel R. Porterfield

I am deeply saddened by today’s hate crime against the Jewish people and the Tree of Life synagogue. This act of hate shocks the conscience and has caused consternation all across the country. Every person should condemn hate and honor our common humanity. No more toxic rhetoric.

Let us keep in our thoughts and prayers the victims, survivors, and relatives of those killed who are experiencing today the most searing feelings of loss. As we join the country in mourning those who have been killed or injured, we must renew our commitment to the work we do at the Aspen Institute to build a better, kinder, and more just and fair world. This crime reminds us of the profound problems of violence and hatred that this country must confront. Our work at the Aspen Institute and in partnership with local and national organizations and businesses is part of the solution.

The Aspen Institute stands with those grieving today and all who work for a better world.
