US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy on Gun Violence, Happiness, and More

June 28, 2015  • Tripp Brockway, Guest Blogger

Dr. Vivek Murthy is pushing the boundaries of what it means to be the surgeon general of the United States, and this was evident in his presence at Spotlight Health at the 2015 Aspen Ideas Festival. In his speaking appearances, he discussed promoting physical literacy, encouraging communities to take charge of their own health, remaining vigilant of global health threats, and expanding the role of the surgeon general to focus on prevention and not just treatment.

As a result, it’s no surprise Murthy dominated the conversation on social media. Here are three of his most powerful quotes from his time in Aspen:

1.  “Happiness affects us on a biological level. Happier people live longer… As we grapple with the challenges of how to create a healthier world, let’s remember that happiness is a powerful tool to improving health.”

2. “I said that gun violence is a public health issue, and I’ll say it again today.”

3. “In 2015, domestic health is global health.”
