Earthworks and Land Art of Herbert Bayer

Join Ann Mullins, Landscape Architect and former Aspen City Council Member, in a tour of the Bauhaus inspired, Bayer designed Aspen Institute Campus.  Beginning in 1945, Bayer worked with Walter Paepcke to fulfill Paepcke’s vision of ‘mind, body, spirit’ on 40 acres of ranchland adjacent to the historic city of Aspen.   After Bayer developed the Campus Master Plan, his first earthworks and land art pieces were constructed in 1955, precursors to the robust earthworks movement of the 1960’s & 70’s. His last earthworks on campus were completed in the late 70’s and foretell the environmental art of the 80’s. Bayer’s campus is a Bauhaus masterpiece which creates a unified environment of environmental stewardship, cultural elements, and community engagement.

All tours meet at the Doerr-Hosier Center (845 Meadows Rd.)
