Great Books Discussion Series: The Individual and Society

In 1947, two educators at the University of Chicago, Robert Maynard Hutchins, president of the university, and Professor Mortimer J. Adler, established the Great Books Foundation to draw together passionate readers to meet and talk about enduring issues and ideas. Three years later, these gentlemen joined Walter Paepcke to form the Aspen Institute. Today, the Great Books program remains integrally linked to the ideals of the Aspen Institute.  This five-week program offers participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the most significant books in the Western intellectual tradition through a weekly moderated dialogue. This year’s series, titled “The Individual and Society,” will feature authors such as Flannery O’Connor, Sophocles, and Franz Kafka, among others.

Senior Aspen Institute moderator Pete Thigpen will lead the series. Pete spent 15 years studying with Mortimer Adler and has been moderating the Aspen Institute’s executive seminar since 1989.

The series sessions will take place on Wednesdays from 6:30-9:00 p.m. beginning Wednesday, February 3, running through Wednesday, March 2 in the Koch Building.

Fee: $195, includes all sessions, readings and light refreshments. Great Books is currently full. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please email Zoe.Brown@aspeninst.org.
