Wilderness, Nature, and Society Seminar

Wilderness, Nature, and Society Seminar

The Socrates Program invites you to join us this autumn in Aspen, Colorado from September 25 – 28th, 2017 for an exciting seminar which will include several days of hiking in the Colorado Rockies.

In the spirit of John Muir, who traveled extensively in nature on a journey of investigation and self-exploration, this seminar probes issues of sustainability, environmental philosophy and ethics while hiking in in the Hunter-Frying Pan Wilderness and lodging in the 10th Mountain Division Huts. Join us for robust discussions on the ethical implications of climate change, and how to leverage new technologies in forging energy policy. These issues will guide participants’ exploration of the meaning of stewardship, and the tension between development and conservation.

This seminar is only open to Socrates Program alumni and members of the Aspen Institute community.

Moderators: Elliot Gerson, Executive Vice President of Policy Programs, Public Programs, and International Partners at the Aspen Institute; and David Monsma, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute’s Energy and Environment Program. Mr. Gerson conceived and designed the original Wilderness Seminar, with the counsel of eminent environmental historian William Cronon, a decade ago when he was responsible for the Aspen Institute’s Seminars Department.
