The Built Environment of Herbert Bayer

Join Ann Mullins, Landscape Architect and former Aspen City Council Member, for a tour of the Bauhaus inspired, Bayer designed buildings on the Aspen Institute Campus.  Beginning in 1945, Bayer worked with Walter Paepcke to fulfill Paepcke’s vision of ‘mind, body, spirit’ on 40 acres of ranchland adjacent to the historic city of Aspen.   Bayer designed over a dozen buildings on the Institute Campus from 1953 to 1962, incorporating the Bauhaus principles he had learned as a student and then master at the Bauhaus.  Strategically placed to maximize the outdoor experience and move the visitor through the varied landscapes of the Institute, his buildings are individually works of art and combined, a cohesive, powerful architectural statement.

All tours meet at the Doerr-Hosier Center (845 Meadows Rd.)
