2022 Benefits Scorecard: A New Resource for Modernizing our Workplace and Public Benefits System

The Benefits Scorecard creates a framework to assess the performance of both public and private benefits in supporting the financial security of workers

Washington, D.C., July 26– Today, the Aspen Institute Financial Security Program (FSP) released its 2022 Benefits Scorecard, a first-of-its-kind assessment of public and workplace benefits in their support of the financial security of workers and their families. This resource will be adopted and adapted by key leaders to center benefit design and delivery around household financial security. 

The 2022 Benefits Scorecard analyzes 22 key public and workplace benefits such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Child Tax Credit (CTC), Paid Sick Leave, Unemployment Insurance, Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance, and Social Security Retirement.  Benefit by benefit, the Scorecard leverages publicly available data to assess performance — regardless of who provides it — along 4 key benefit dimensions: value, delivery, access and use, and interactions with other benefits. The Scorecard makes key recommendations about how to drive up the performance of benefits to enhance their support  of worker financial security.

This 2022 Benefits Scorecard is the anchor for our Benefits21 work–it provides a resource to understand the benefits landscape, assesses public and workplace benefits in their support of workers and their families, and signals opportunities for innovation to close critical benefit gaps and modernize our benefits to inclusively and equitably support all workers,” explains Sarika Abbi, Associate Director of Benefits21. “For policymakers, it’s a resource to assess and improve benefits at the federal, state, and local level and explore policy actions to enhance financial security for all workers and their families. And for business leaders, it’s a resource to assess and improve current workplace benefits, explore new offerings and examine their role in strengthening access, use and impact of public benefits.”
