Building & Supporting a More Diverse Healthcare Workforce

September 17, 2020  • Aspen Ideas Now

Medical school faculty and active physicians in the US are predominantly white (64% of faculty and 56% of physicians) and male (59% of faculty and 64% of physicians). And while Black Americans comprise 13% of the US population, they make up only 4% of the active physician workforce. These numbers clearly illustrate that providers do not reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, and research has suggested that this can have a negative impact on patient outcomes. How can we build and support a more diverse healthcare workforce, starting with academic medical institutions?

Join Aspen Ideas: Health on September 17 (3:00-3:30 pm ET) to hear Dr. Uché Blackstock, founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity and an emergency medicine specialist in New York City, discuss her work to dismantle bias, racism, and inequity in healthcare with Dr. Lipi Roy, a medical contributor with MSNBC and NBC News.
