Painting the American Portrait: Diversity in Museums

June 30, 2016  • Arts Program

As passionate believers in the power of museums and their exceptionally important contributions to the lives of individuals, communities, and our country as a whole, we realize that most institutions lack demographic and cultural diversity in their staffs. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s 2015 Art Museum Staff Demographic Survey confirms this long-standing and distressing pattern, as does the 2016 survey by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. What contributes to this challenge and what are actions and strategies that can help museum leadership address this pressing issue?
