Should Washington, DC Be the 51st State?

April 8, 2021  • Aspen Ideas Now

The 700,00 people of Washington, DC are American citizens who pay more federal income taxes per capita than the citizens of any other state, and yet they do not enjoy the full benefits of citizenship. The US House of Representatives will vote later this month on whether to admit Washington, DC as the 51st state. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser sits down with former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter at Bloomberg CityLab 2021 to discuss. CityLab is produced by the Aspen Institute in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies.
