Open Letter in the Washington Post

Since 2011 the Aspen Institute Justice & Society Program’s Inclusive America Project has studied America’s burgeoning religious diversity and how to constructively engage it to further the common good. Religious freedom and tolerance, core constitutional values, have been attacked by commentators and other public figures in recent months. That is why we have spoken out in an open letter in The Washington Post. Co-sponsored by the Shoulder-to-Shoulder Campaign, and partially underwritten by Ambassador John L. Loeb, Jr. and the George Washington Institute for Religious Freedom, the letter has been signed by forty-nine religious and civic leaders representing a number of faiths and viewpoints. It reminds that since the days of the Founders, religious tolerance has been essential to the American idea. In the months to come, we’ll offer on our website additional thoughts on fostering inclusion for people of all faiths, and no faith, to build a more robust national fabric.
