The light of the imagination shines through the freedom that emerges within constraint. There is a freedom which triumphs within the boundaries, not outside them. In a period of unusual limits, what freedom have you discovered? Are there things that have heightened your perceptions, tricks of light or feeling that have thrilled a nerve? Willa Cather dwells on the painter, less so the writer, but her invocation of the fleeting pleasure that comes with a certain combination of form and color applies to those who aspire to be artists of life. What is your “style”? What is your way of seeing and feeling things in the world? What composition of freedom will you give expression to within the day’s constraints?
