The California Open Campus Initiative (CAOCI) project will provide access to innovative tools and resources designed to meet the unique learning needs of students, including students with disabilities and/or limited English proficiency in the participating 16 California school districts. This consortium of 16 California school districts (LEAs), in partnership with business, non-profits, and lead researchers from the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education, proposes to leverage time, resources, and opportunity to expand access to online learning opportunities for students and teachers with the overarching goals to increase student achievement in math and science and to enhance college readiness. Federal funds will expand access to rigorous, evidence-based, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) resources via virtual learning environments. These effective teaching and learning resources will be accessible to students from the classroom, home or any location with access to the Internet. The project will 1) increase access to college preparatory curriculum for high-needs students attending underperforming schools or schools in high-poverty or rural areas of the State; 2) increase student achievement as indicated by first time pass rates for students (all subgroups) in Algebra I, mean scores on Algebra I California Standards Test, and increased PSAT / SAT / AP scores of all students; 3) increase rates of college readiness, as indicated by high school graduation rates, the number of traditionally underserved students (low SES, language and ethnic diversity) successfully completing AP courses, and the number of high school graduates who have satisfied University of California entrance requirements.
