CityLab 2013: For Cities, Transportation an Integral Part of Growth

October 7, 2013

As urban centers across the country — and the world — rapidly expand, experts believe there’s one common factor that serves as a catalyst for this growth: the expansion of transportation options. At the CityLab summit, leaders from the transportation sector and city government discussed transit trends in their cities, the future challenges they face and opportunities for improvement.

“The future of NYC is tied to its transit system,” said New York City Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. “It’s integral to our daily lives.”

In the video below, Sadik-Khan discusses the importance of making it easy for people to get around.

Santa Monica Mayor Pam O’Connor expressed the need for stronger partnerships with the federal and state levels in transportation, but said that right now, “we are doing the heavy lifting [in providing public transportation options.]”
