Mutual Knowledge, Albert Schweitzer

Meditation

Perhaps the greatest surprise is not how frequently we misunderstand each other but rather the miracle that we ever understand each other at all. Language is an imperfect medium, compounding the difficulties of knowing one another or even knowing ourselves. There is a mystery in the relationship between one person and another, a mystery which defies understanding and nonetheless is deeply known. Let us give thanks for the affinities of soul which penetrate the semi-darkness of our wanderings through life. What we share with one another is precious—it never expires but endures always and everywhere.
