Oh me! Oh life! At the height of my dramatics, I’ve uttered some rendition of this phrase more than once when confronted with my mortality and inability to determine my purpose in this life. Whitman’s question and answer offers a peek into many of our brains and innermost conversations – What good amid these, O me, O life? And then, he answers himself with a most profound wisdom – “That you are here – that life exists and identity,/That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.” When confronted with existential musings on your life’s purpose, perhaps reduce your contribution to simply a verse in the great play of life. What verse will you contribute?
