Our Society Reimagined is a four-week series that provides an opportunity to explore the domestic issues that have shaped our modern society, as well as a chance to gain perspective on the underlying values and ideas that we hold as individuals and as a society, and how these tenets shape our lives.
Wednesday, October 21: Public Health and Personal Liberty in the Age of Coronavirus Understanding and predicting individual choices has a critical impact in determining the most effective public health policies for dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Can we rely on individuals collectively to make the right choices? Or must individuals be forced to comply with public health-appropriate practices, resulting in the degradation of one of our most fundamental constitutional freedoms? Few would oppose the state regulating excessive speeding on highways, yet many would argue that risking others’ lives by not wearing a mask or not getting vaccinated is a personal right. How do we find the right balance?
