A weekly series reimagining a better society post COVID-19. Over the last six months we have looked broadly at the social contract, narrowly at the changes we’d like to make within ourselves, and consistently at the changes we’d like to see in society. Law provides for compensation when individuals are harmed or wrongly deprived of property. What are the arguments for reparations when whole peoples have been treated unjustly? Can those living be compensated for historical injustices which took place before they were born? What obligations do the living have for the wrongs committed by their ancestors? Can reparations lead to reconciliation?
