This edition of Update examines the experiences of six sectoral employment development programs as they tackled specific communications challenges and attempted to build their overall communications capacity. Although based on activities undertaken by sector programs, this 16-page publication offers numerous insights helpful to any organization interested in building its communications function. The publication: describes common communications pitfalls and challenges; outlines the four basic steps involved in developing effective communications strategies; and discusses the role of market research and marketing in planning and executing communications projects. Concrete examples, drawn from participants’ experiences, are used liberally throughout.
