Plenary: Repair as a Leadership Imperative

August 23, 2023  • Aspen Global Leadership Network

“What I actually desire is to be with you in the difficult moments of struggle.  And the word I prefer is not leadership, but servanthood. Servants: those who stand among the people and model with the people faithfulness to the vision of the future.”

– Starsky Wilson, President, Children’s Defense Fund

In this plenary session, hear:

  1. From Starsky Wilson, President of the Children’s Defense Fund, as he addresses the central question of what are the risks involved in the process of making the vision of “beloved community” come to life. Explore how he navigated this call for leadership when he led Missouri’s Ferguson Truth Commission in the wake of the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown in 2014 and dealt with various risks that came along with stepping up for a fractured community.

  2. From a group of distinguished global leaders involved in repair works across diverse regions. Moderated by Africa Leadership Initiative – South Africa Fellow Heather Sonn, Director of Gamiro Investments, this panel includes voices such as Africa Leadership Initiative – East Africa Fellow Hope Azeda, Founder & Artistic Director/Festival Curator, Mashirika Performing Arts & Media Company/Ubumuntu Arts Organization, Ana Maria Mondragón Duque, Deputy Judge, Special Jurisdiction for Peace, and Frank Pearl, Moderator, Instituto Aspen Columbia, and Ari Bassin, a Fellow of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
