Plenary: Risking it All

August 23, 2023  • Aspen Global Leadership Network

I think that oppressive regimes can either unwrap the worst of a person or the best of a person.

– Felix Maradiaga, Nicaraguan Activist, Founder, Fundación Libertad

Amid the shadow of oppressive regimes, a select few individuals transcend the instinct to escape, instead opting to stand firm, challenge the status quo, and redefine the very essence of courage through action. Guiding us through a profound exploration of this journey is Chadia El Meouchi Naoum, Co-Founder of the Middle East Leadership Initiative and Managing Partner of Badri and Salim El Meouchi Law Firm. The spotlight of this session shifts to two extraordinary individuals, Bill Browder, Founder & CEO of Hermitage Capital Management and the driving force behind the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign, as well as the acclaimed author of “Red Notice,” and Felix Maradiaga, a resolute Nicaraguan Activist and the visionary behind Fundación Libertad who was imprisoned and tortured for being a presidential candidate opposing the Ortega regime. These exceptional voices recount tales of exceptional bravery, marked by their unwavering dissent against their respective governments.

This session goes beyond mere discourse. It delves deeper into the human dimension of these struggles by inviting Bill Browder’s and Felix Maradiaga’s children, Alexander and Alejandra, to share their unique perspectives of parents in danger due to the world’s grave injustices.
