It is the great challenge of the 21st century to lift billions from poverty, while coping with a changing climate, frequent crises and greater demands for resources. It is estimated that, by 2050, the world will need to increase food production by 70 percent. Many regions of the world with steep projected declines in agricultural production are the same places that struggle with fast-growing populations, and also a lack of access to family planning and reproductive health services. How can we sustainably and equitably feed a growing world population?
