At an August webinar with the Institute’s Education & Society Program, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, and Aspen Ascend parent advisor Waukecha Wilkerson explained, “How Governors and Mayors Can Support Schools so Schools Can Support Students.” Moderated by NPR’s Sasha-Ann Simons and carried live by C-SPAN, the event highlighted Education & Society recommendations calling on elected officials to give educators more money, guidance, collaboration, and leadership. This year, educators faced intersecting national crises— medical, economic, racial—that disrupted school for a generation of young people. Meanwhile, schools ended up acting as first responders, providing millions of meals and ensuring access to computers and broadband, straining their capacity to focus on their core work. Evers acknowledged schools shouldn’t handle so much and said multiple agencies should connect their work—and their budgets—to better serve families.
