Aspen Institute Opens Eighth Wye Fellows Program Season
Featuring FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler

QUEENSTOWN, MD, September 30, 2014 – The Aspen Institute opened its eighth program season with the Aspen Wye Fellows on Friday, September 26, at River House on the 1100-acre Aspen Wye River campus in Queenstown, Md. Approximately 100 Fellows and guests took part in a dialogue on “Competition in the New Communications Landscape” with Tom Wheeler, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC); Al Sikes, former FCC Chairman, and Charles Firestone, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Communications and Society Program.

The speakers and the Aspen Wye Fellows discussed a wide range of issues under the purview of the FCC, including the internet, satellite communications, wireless, cable, broadband access, net neutrality, social media and new communications technology. The program was preceded and followed by a reception.

The Aspen Wye Fellows were established in Summer 2006 as an organization to connect the Aspen Wye River Campus in Queenstown with residents of the Eastern Shore who are intellectually curious individuals interested in meaningful dialogue with world thought leaders. Over 150 individuals have joined the Fellows in its first seven years. The Fellows provide an extensive program of eight programs and receptions yearly between September and June at Houghton House or River House on the Wye River campus; two concerts a year; monthly book talks at the Aspen Institute office in Washington, DC; other Washington-based events; and summer events at the campus in Aspen, Colorado.

Notable speakers have ranged from Queen Noor of Jordan to US Secretaries of Defense, State, Agriculture, Homeland Security and Attorney General; from the Afghanistan, Egyptian, Mexican and Austrian Ambassadors to the United States to US Ambassadors to Romania, Nepal and Morocco; and  authors including Khalid Hosseini and Walter Isaacson. Additional conversations with Wye Fellows have featured educators, business and military leaders, journalists, explorers and cultural leaders.
