Role of Community College

Community colleges play a critical role in workforce development across the nation. They have a broad mission to provide academic programming and skills training to prepare students for jobs or to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. In order to access and make effective use of community colleges’ training resources, many workers, particularly those with low-incomes and family responsibilities, need services and supports that go beyond what a college typically provides. WSI’s research explores innovation by community colleges, and in particular, approaches to partnering with community-based organizations that support the success of low-income students. This includes approaches to improving access, persistence and academic progress and strategies that more effectively link training to work opportunities and employment.

What does it take to support apprenticeships, what is the business value for participating firms, and what are the outcomes for apprentices? WSI is conducting an evaluation of an initiative to scale apprenticeship in Chicagoland.

Accelerating Opportunity

WSI partnered with the Urban Institute and George Washington University to carry out an independent evaluation of Accelerating Opportunity, an initiative to increase the ability of students with low basic skills to access skills training linked to work.

Through Courses to Employment, WSI has conducted extensive research on partnerships between community colleges and community-based organizations. This approach to partnering can improve access by low-income people to industry-focused training linked to employment and help them persist in training supported by services geared toward their needs.
