Aspen Tech Policy Hub Demo Day: Strengthening Support in Times of Crisis

MARCH 1, 2022 – Current public resources are not equipped to adequately support citizens in all forms of crisis. 911 responders, for example, are not able to provide care for those experiencing mental health crises. At the same time, technology-enabled mass monitoring has exacerbated cases of domestic violence and stalking. How can governments ensure citizens get the proper resources and support they need?

Climate Tech Has A People Problem

We need more people who understand the science and technology underpinning climate change at the table as big decisions are made. And we need diverse voices to highlight unexpected consequences of our decisions, so that groupthink does not lead us to ignore climate change’s effects on underserved communities. Until science and policy can talk to each other, we are unlikely to make adequate progress.

Americans are living 21st century lives using 20th century infrastructure. Now is the time to get prepared for the next crisis as well as for the economic and technological changes ahead. Stakeholders have the insights and resources to address these challenges: we must work across sectors and silos, integrate equity and climate into every decision, embrace community input and data, pursue innovative financing mechanisms, and ground infrastructure in the dynamic needs of our citizens. Congress has green-lit the path ahead. Now it’s time to get creative and work together in this historic moment.
