The Transformative Power of Deep Listening, Reflection, and Community: Inside the Seminar Experience

The Aspen Institute is renowned for its Fellowships. These programs support leaders across sectors as they deepen their skills, clarify their values, and build peer relationships that sustain and strengthen their work over time. Aspen Fellowships are anchored in a Seminar experience that, for many participants, becomes a catalytic moment—one that accelerates their leadership journey.

The Aspen Business & Society Program stewards two Fellowships designed to equip corporate intrapreneurs with the courage, conviction, and capabilities to deliver value to their companies—and meaningful impact for society. The First Movers Fellowship Program, now in its 18th year, has supported and connected 335 leaders from dozens of Fortune 500 companies. As the leader of that program for more than six years, I witnessed firsthand how consistently the Seminar experience proved transformative for Fellows. Building on First Movers’ success—and with support from the Ballmer Foundation—we launched the Economic Mobility Fellowship in 2023, a parallel program designed to accelerate the work of corporate leaders advancing economic opportunity for workers and families across the country.

Having watched many Fellows move through their Seminar experience over the years, I’ve seen how these immersive moments spark real change. As we begin the selection process for our 2026 classes, I’ve been reflecting on the distinctive elements that make these Fellowships so powerful.

Listening Unlocks Understanding

Our Fellows are highly accomplished leaders. They are often sought out for their expertise, judgment, and confidence. It can therefore take some unlearning to move beyond the idea that leadership is primarily about direction and certainty. Our approach centers deep listening as a core leadership capability.

Our commitment to deep listening shows up in multiple ways. Dedicated modules on user research, question crafting, stakeholder engagement—and yes, listening—help Fellows strengthen these skills. Just as importantly, regular dialogue in the seminar room creates ongoing opportunities to practice them. Through engaged listening with peers and stakeholders, Fellows sharpen their insights, build empathy, and gain clarity about how to pursue lasting impact.

Reflection Drives Clarity

Stepping back to reflect on one’s core motivations is difficult under any circumstances. It is especially hard for business leaders whose roles demand constant responsiveness. Over time, that pace can become not only exhausting but disorienting, pulling leaders away from the convictions that originally motivated their work. The Seminar experience creates space for Fellows to listen not only to one another, but also to their own inner compass.

One Economic Mobility Fellow, Samantha Holcomb, described this challenge simply:

“It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day grind. Looming deadlines and constant emails and Slacks leave little room for connection with our colleagues.”

Aspen Fellowships create space for reflection through multiple modalities, from text-based dialogue and storytelling to the natural beauty of the physical settings we choose. This intentional design helps Fellows reconnect with their core purpose and think more clearly about how they want to use their Fellowship year to act on it.

Connection Fosters Courage

Driving change inside large organizations is hard work—and often lonely. Within the shared Seminar experience, we design for deep and diverse peer connections that provide Fellows with the support and perspective needed to persist through uncertainty and setbacks.

Mirit Cohen, a recent First Mover, explained to her 11-year-old daughter how the Seminar shaped her excitement for the year ahead:

“We got to know each other through stories and meals and learned all about what the next year is going to be like. We also talked a lot about the problems we’re each trying to solve and all the possibilities we see ahead.”

The connections Fellows form during their Seminars endure well beyond those few days. “Once a Fellow, always a Fellow” – a commitment we honor by welcoming participants into a robust alumni community that supports them long after the Fellowship year concludes.

The End Is Just The Beginning

Like summer camp, the end of a Seminar week is often bittersweet. Fellows leave changed by just a few short days together, having surfaced new ideas, shared resolve, and strengthened their sense of purpose and courage.

Camille Jimenez, a 2025 First Mover Fellow, reflected on the close of her most recent Seminar this way:

“I’m looking forward to seeing how this year of learning and reflection will continue to stretch and shape us all, both personally and professionally… though I’m in no rush, because time moves fast and I want to take it all in.”

Nominations for the First Movers Fellowship and the Economic Mobility Fellowship are now open.
