Walter Scheidel is the Dickason Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Classics and History at Stanford University. The author or editor of 20 books, he studies premodern social and economic history, demography, and the global history of labor, state formation, human welfare and inequality. His book The Great Leveler: Violence and the History of Inequality from the Stone Age to the Twenty-First Century, published by Princeton University Press in 2017, has been translated into 14 languages.
