Our Policy Work

Justice and Society Program

Director: Alice H. Henkin
Program Coordinator: Michael Doyle

The Justice and Society Program, directed jointly with the Justice and Society Seminars, brings together leaders from government, the private sector, and the nongovernmental and intergovernmental communities to focus on the intersection of international law, international norms and human rights. The principal current activity of the Justice and Society Program focuses on human rights within UN and other multinational peacekeeping operations.

Human Rights expert speaks about U.S. torture policy. The Justice and Society Program hosted a Book Talk on December 14, 2005, at the Aspen Institute’s New York Series featuring authors and editors of recently published books. Kenneth Roth, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch and co-editor of Torture: Does it Make Us Safer? Is It Ever OK?, spoke about torture, its implications and rationale. Detailing his views on the impact of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of detainees by the United States, and the damage done to the rule of law when the U.S. openly defies it, thereby inviting others to act likewise, Roth made the case for an absolute ban on torture. Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter provided additional commentary.
