ASG Summer Workshop 2024
The Aspen Strategy Group convened for its 40th annual Summer Workshop from July 19-22, 2024 in Aspen, CO. The meeting brought together over fifty ASG members and invited experts from the fields of government, academia, journalism, and business to discuss national security in the age of artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence presents the most complex challenge to the world order since the advent of nuclear weapons almost eight decades ago. Today, our national security is at an inflection point. By harnessing AI, the United States will undoubtedly make great strides in cyber defense, intelligence, and military operations. But as we venture into these uncharted waters, the U.S. government must set forward-looking guardrails to address the unique security threats posed by AI.
The Summer Workshop participants weighed how to leverage artificial intelligence to advance U.S. interests while working with like-minded partners and allies to mitigate its most serious risks. The sessions covered the infrastructure needs and energy supply required for AI, the changing threat landscape, priorities for defense acquisition, and the implications of unmanned weapons systems, among other subjects.
In the coming months, the Aspen Strategy Group will publish a collection of articles based on the workshop discussions, including any pieces published in major media outlets by the participants that capture the ideas emanating from the meeting. This collection will be available in fall 2024.
