Aspen Institute Hosts October 5 Cello Recital

QUEENSTOWN, MD, September 22, 2014 – The Aspen Institute will host a cello recital on Sunday, October 5, at 3 p.m. at The Inn adjacent to River House on the Aspen Institute Wye River Campus off Carmichael Road in Queenstown. The recital program will include Saint-Saens’ Sonata in c minor, Op. 32; Brahms’ Sonata #2 in F major, Op. 99; and Beethoven’s Sonata #3 in A major, Op. 69.  A reception will follow in River House.

The recital will feature Michael Kannen, cello, and Kyung Wha Chu, piano. 

Michael Kannen is currently the Director of Chamber Music at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.  He has also served on the faculties of Dartmouth College, Purchase College Conservatory of Music, University of Texas, Yellow Barn School and Festival, Taos School of Music, Tanglewood and National Music Camp at Interlochen, and given master classes at many institutions. He was a founding member of the Brentano Quartet and a member of the Meliora String Quartet and the Figaro Trio, and currently plays with the Apollo Trio.  Mr. Kannen has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Berkshire Bach Society, and has appeared at many major summer music festivals. He has performed internationally at the Sydney Opera House, the International Musician Seminar in England, the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Chatelet Theater in Paris and Wigmore Hall in London, and has been featured extensively on radio, television and in recordings.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Kyung Wha Chu began piano studies at the age of eight, and continued her education at the New England Conservatory at fifteen, receiving her Bachelor of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She is also a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory, where she studied with Leon Fleisher. She has been a winner of many competitions, including the Korean Broadcasting System Competition, Korean Newspaper Music Competition, Baltimore Music Club Competition, Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition and Royal Conservatory of Music Concerto Competition. She has performed many solo recitals, has appeared as a soloist with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra and Royal Conservatory of Music Orchestra.
