Dr. Ashwin Vasan is a primary care physician and epidemiologist who has spent more than two decades working to give everyone a fair shot at a long, healthy life. He pairs frontline patient care experience with executive leadership and policy expertise, turning a deep understanding of complex health systems into ambitious policy and pragmatic solutions. Years of work across the United States and the global South, from sub-Saharan Africa to India, have shaped his view of the world’s most pressing health challenges and their solutions, making him a trusted voice on the forces that shape health and wellbeing, from public institutions and technology to the social conditions of everyday life.
Dr. Vasan was appointed as New York City’s 44th Health Commissioner in late 2021 and served through to 2024, leading one of the world’s largest municipal health agencies, where he was responsible for the health of 8.5 million New Yorkers. During his tenure, he guided the city out of COVID-19, the mpox outbreak, and a growing mental health crisis, while advancing initiatives focused on prevention and population health, health care affordability and fairness, and modernizing public health infrastructure.
Under his leadership, the city launched and passed into law HealthyNYC, the health agenda which led NYC to reach its highest ever life expectancy of 83.2 years in 2024, driven by reductions in COVID deaths, heart disease, screenable cancers, suicides, and a historic 28% decrease in overdose deaths in the final year of his tenure. He launched first-of-its-kind programs, including NYC TeenSpace, a digital mental health platform now serving more than 75,000 young people with licensed teletherapy, and expanded supports for people with severe mental health needs. He made affordability central to the agency, spearheading the relief of $2B in medical debt for 500,000 New Yorkers, which continues today, and the launch of the Office of Healthcare Accountability that shines lights on local hospital prices.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Vasan served as CEO of the mental health nonprofit Fountain House, and spent more than a decade with Partners In Health and the World Health Organization working on global HIV/AIDS and health systems initiatives to expand access to care. Today, he continues to work at the crossroads of public service and innovation as an Operating Partner at Commonweal Ventures and as a Senior Fellow in Health Policy and Global Affairs at Yale University.
He holds a BA in Economics from UCLA, a Masters in Epidemiology from Harvard, his MD from the University of Michigan, and his PhD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and served on the clinical and teaching faculty at NYP and Columbia University for more than a decade, before departing for Yale.
Dr Vasan sits on the Board of Directors several national organizations focused on health and mental well-being, including the Child Mind Institute, OneMind, and the Mental Health Coalition, and serves as an advisor to The Milken Institute, inseparable, The David Prize, and to health AI startups including Humanitas and Altitude. A native of Chicago with roots in Chennai, India, Dr. Vasan is based in New York City with his wife and three children, enjoys cooking, and is a dedicated supporter of Arsenal Football Club and all things Chicago sports.
