The story of the Aspen Institute began with a vision. In 1945, during a visit to Aspen, Colorado, Chicago businessman Walter Paepcke and his wife, Elizabeth, were captivated by the town’s stunning natural surroundings. They saw in Aspen more than just beauty—they saw potential. A place where artists, academics, leaders, and musicians could gather to reflect on the deeper values of society and culture. Their vision gave rise to what is now known as The Aspen Idea: the belief that nurturing mind, body, and spirit is a recipe for human flourishing.
More than 75 years later, that vision lives on. Through Aspen Community Programs, the Institute continues to offer dynamic opportunities for locals and visitors alike to engage with big ideas and timeless questions. Our events—designed for adults and teens—encourage civil dialogue, intellectual curiosity, and meaningful connection.
