Launched in 2017, the annual Aspen Leadership Forum on Retirement Savings brings together leaders from industry, government, consumer advocacy, academia, and more to grapple with the issues that have prevented the United States from building the inclusive, adequate savings system necessary to achieve retirement security for all.
The ultimate goal of the Forum is to accelerate convergence on critical dimensions of policy and marketplace innovation that will enable all workers in America to meaningfully participate in a retirement savings system that builds financial security. The scope of these issues, and their profound impacts on American households’ financial security and well-being, makes it all the more urgent to bring together a diverse group of powerful voices to chart the way forward. For its tenth consecutive year, the Aspen Leadership Forum on Retirement Savings served as the premier venue for this critical dialogue.
With momentum building across states and at the federal level, this year’s Forum focused squarely on expanding access to workplace retirement savings—how we move closer to universal coverage, who is still being left out, and what it will take to close those gaps in durable, scalable ways.
Rather than revisit familiar debates about expanding access, we asked a sharper question: If the U.S. were to move toward a national approach to retirement savings access, what should it actually look like—and what would it take to make it actually work for the low-to-moderate income workers who need it most?
