The Aspen Tech Policy Hub is thrilled to announce the launch of our Science & Technology Policy Fellowship and Writing for Policy Short Course. The fellowship will teach science and technology experts with limited policy experience how to impact policy. The short course will provide a basic introduction to writing for policy and concrete writing strategies for influencing local policy outcomes.
We are hosting three informational webinars on February 15, 28, and March 7 to provide more information on the fellowship and short course and answer any questions from potential applicants. You can register for the webinars below.
Science and Technology Summer Fellowship:
The Summer and Technology Fellowship is paid and will consist of two blocks: 1) a mandatory, in-person, full-time policy bootcamp that teaches participants the basics of policymaking, including practical exercises; and 2) an optional final project. The policy bootcamp will take place from June 5-28, 2024 at Tides Converge in San Francisco. Fellows will have the option to work remotely part-time on a final project from June 28-August 25, 2024. Applications are due on March 7 at 11:59pm PT.
This program is for US-based individuals with subject matter expertise in a science and technology field. Any science and technology professional can apply, but this year we will prioritize admitting those who work in one of three priority areas: emerging technology; cybersecurity; and climate change. We will also prioritize individuals who work directly with communities that face marginalization and/or that seek to tackle disparities around race and ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and other aspects of diversity.
Accepted fellows will receive a $7,500 stipend to defray the costs of participating in the in-person fellowship (e.g., food and lodging). Out of town participants will also receive a small stipend to cover travel to the Bay Area. Those who opt into and successfully complete the optional, final project phase will be awarded an additional $5,000. See here to apply for the fellowship [Insert link once fellowship app is live].
Writing for Policy Short Course:
The Writing for Policy Short Course is unpaid, part-time, and will take place virtually from April 29 to May 3, 2024 from 11:30am – 1:30pm ET daily. This short course will provide a basic introduction to writing for policy and concrete writing strategies for influencing local policy outcomes. An optional recap session will be held on May 15 to provide feedback on your submissions.
We especially encourage applicants who:
- Have little prior policy writing experience;
- Are interested in honing their policy writing ability;
- Are hoping to workshop their writing before joining a lengthier Hub program; and/or
- Have previously applied but not been accepted to a Hub program and want to strengthen their application.
