- Dialogue Across Difference
- Understanding Over Agreement
This year’s contest drew 61 submissions from 46 individuals across 25 states & territories of the United States — from California to Texas, Puerto Rico to Washington, DC, representing a wide range of perspectives, mediums, and experiences.
Each work offered a powerful reflection on what it means to lead, connect, and create meaning in today’s world

Grand Prize Winner
“Within All”
Description: My work shows how even one conversation despite differences can set an example for others to follow. All individuals are shaped by various factors, ranging from religious affiliation to cultural background, or simply the personalities of those around them. These unique beliefs and characteristics define us, and there is often discomfort in seeking out differing views of others. However, those who choose to break convention and understand others’ perspectives are the ones who build true connection. Within everyone there is compassion for humanity regardless of disagreement. Thus, it is everyone’s responsibility to have conversations that create community rather than just coexistence.
Mina Fujii (Abington, PA)
Mina Fujii is a mixed-media artist who distorts her self portrait to portray the feelings of exclusion, insecurity, and introspection that arise in the process of growing up in America’s changing cultural landscape. She employs a mixed-media technique, typically combining acrylic painting with collage and drawing. Mina is currently pursuing a BFA in Studio Art at Washington University in St. Louis, with a second major in American Culture Studies and a minor in Entrepreneurship. At the very least, she hopes her artwork provides something colorful to enjoy viewing. You can find her on her website (minafujii.com) or her Instagram (@sirb33f).
Finalists

“A Few More Steps”
Description: My landscape paintings begin with close observation of public outdoor spaces. Living beings and topographical elements accumulate through time and seasonal change, creating an abundance of visual information to absorb and understand. Through painting, I translate this experience into tactile, layered surfaces that ask the viewer to slow down and look closely. My paintings reflect the importance of stepping outside the pace of day-to-day life to become more attentive to the complexity of the environments around us.
For me, this act of looking connects to the theme of Understanding over Agreement. The multifaceted world around us does not offer a single, fixed perspective; it is constantly shifting, shaped by both human actions and forces outside human control. By pausing to observe rather than immediately interpreting, we make space for complexity in our relationship to land and that which is beyond ourselves.
I find that deepening our awareness of our surroundings can change how we understand our place within them. My work encourages a willingness to sit with what is layered, unfamiliar, and continually shifting, recognizing that deeper understanding often comes through sustained curiosity rather than immediate conclusions.
Lindsay Mueller (Arlington, VA)
Artist Bio: Lindsay Mueller is an artist fascinated by the layered relationships humans have with outdoor spaces. Originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, she now lives and works in Arlington, Virginia. Mueller holds Bachelors’ degrees in Painting and Psychology from Boston University and an MFA in Visual Arts from American University. She has exhibited across the U.S. at venues including Studio Break Gallery, the University of Mary Washington, the Peale Museum, and Chautauqua Institution. “La Pregunta”
Description: Lotería is a game built around recognition. You see the card, know the image, and wait to see if it belongs on your board. La Pregunta changes the rules a little. Instead of giving you something to recognize almost immediately, this card asks you to slow down before deciding what they see.
The card reflects the idea that meaningful dialogue does not always come from reaching the same conclusion.
Sometimes it comes from being willing to slow down, and ask why someone arrived at a different one.
After all, Lotería would be a pretty boring game if every card were the same.
Karina Calderon (Shelbyville, IN)
Artist Bio: A 19-year-old design student from Indiana studying at the University of Michigan’s Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. Passionate about finding ways to communicate ideas that resonate with people while leaving room for imagination. Everyday life serves as a starting point, finding inspiration in ordinary objects. Through hands-on experience, has expanded creative practice into branding and visual identity. A bit of a romanticizer by nature and always eager to learn from the world. Outside of design, a firm believer that strawberry is the best ice cream flavor.

“To be known”
Description: To reach true understanding you must first allow yourself to be seen. Aspen’s lens creates a framework for radical transparency. This allows participants find true authenticity and build meaningful dialogue, with the goal not being sameness but highlighting each individual’s unique story. The Aspen lens cuts out background noise to reveal what is most important.
Sydney Ginger (Albuquerque, NM)
Artist Bio: Sydney Ginger is an artist from Denver, Colorado, now living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she serves as an active duty Air Force officer. Having called six places home in nine years, she uses painting and digital expression to capture the unique character and beauty of each place and its people. Her mission is to inspire creativity by bringing art into unlikely places, from murals inside nuclear missile silos to paintings that teach leadership. She believes art is both a creative outlet and a tool for connection, a way to spark new thinking in even the most structured environments.

“Common Frequency”
Description: Common Frequency explores what happens when we reach across the spaces that divide us. Two figures stand firmly in their own worlds, separated by a chasm and surrounded by distinct fields of color and energy. Neither crosses to the other side, and neither is asked to surrender their perspective. Instead, they send something of themselves outward. Their individual frequencies expand until they intersect, creating a shared space that belongs wholly to neither person, yet contains elements of both.
I was inspired by the idea that meaningful dialogue does not require sameness or even agreement. Understanding begins when we are willing to listen beyond our own boundaries and allow another person’s experience to enter our field of view. The overlapping circles represent that moment of connection: difference remains, but separation becomes less absolute. Common Frequency speaks to both Dialogue across Difference and Understanding over Agreement by imagining understanding not as two people becoming one, but as two distinct voices discovering where they can resonate.
Laurie Cavender (Pensacola, FL)
Artist Bio: Laurie Cavender is a contemporary artist based in Pensacola, Florida, whose vibrant, expressive paintings explore human connection, resilience, and the shared experiences that shape our lives. Through bold color, layered symbolism, and imaginative storytelling, her work invites viewers to look beyond the surface and discover meaning in unexpected places. Often drawing inspiration from the relationship between people, nature, and water, Laurie approaches art with curiosity, optimism, and a belief in our collective humanity. Her work celebrates the beauty of imperfection, the strength of the human spirit, and the possibility of seeing the world in a different light.
