The Compton Unified School District (CUSD) is committed to empowering every student to thrive in college, career, and life through equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities. Our mission is to provide rigorous, engaging, and supportive learning experiences that prepare all students for success in an ever-changing world. Guided by a vision of excellence and opportunity for every learner, CUSD serves approximately 18,000 students in one of California’s most diverse urban communities.
Approximately 82% of students identify as Latino, 15% as Black/African American, nearly one in five students are English learners, and more than 90% qualify as unduplicated pupils through economic disadvantage, English learner status, or foster youth designation. Over the past decade, CUSD has significantly expanded access to advanced academic opportunities, resulting in substantial growth in English, Math, Advanced Placement participation, Dual enrollment, and college acceptance. These efforts reflect our belief that students should not be limited by circumstance but empowered through access to rigorous coursework and meaningful postsecondary pathways.
Compton Unified is honored to join the Aspen Institute and College Board’s Social Mobility Leadership Network to collaborate with districts across the nation committed to expanding opportunity. We believe that increasing equitable access to high-quality advanced coursework is one of the most powerful strategies for promoting social mobility. Through this network, we look forward to learning from our peers, sharing our successes, and advancing innovative practices that ensure every student graduates with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to pursue their aspirations.
