About the District

Richmond Public Schools proudly serves 22,000 students in the capital of the Commonwealth, making us one of the hundred largest school divisions in the country. Approximately two-thirds of our students are economically disadvantaged, and one in five is learning English. Our mission is to ensure every RPS student graduates with the tools and knowledge to live a life of their own determination.

Our strategic plan, Dreams4RPS, holds a vision in which every scholar crosses the graduation stage with a diploma in hand and a postsecondary plan in mind – enrollment in higher education, employment in a high-wage career, or enlistment in public service.

That vision is why we are redesigning all five comprehensive high schools through Passion4Learning, anchoring each in a rigorous, career-connected theme built alongside employers and higher education partners.

We join the Social Mobility Leadership Network because earning a credential is not the same thing as having mobility. We are eager to learn from districts that are pressure-testing that distinction and to share what we discover with our community.
