Building an Ownership Culture: From the Shop Floor to the National Narrative

Employee ownership won’t scale on finance alone — it has to become normal, expected, even obvious, across finance, higher ed, business advising, and the broader American narrative.

In this issue of From the Forum, we’re revisiting a panel from the 2026 Employee Ownership Ideas Forum that brought together four leading voices in the field for a conversation that moves from the shop floor to the boardroom to the national narrative.

They start inside the company, digging into what ownership culture actually requires on the ground — sharing financial information with workers, training the managers who make or break the experience, and building the basic conditions of job quality and well-being it depends on.

From there, they zoom out to consider how ownership culture is reinforced through governance and spread at scale through advisors, higher education, and public campaigns, as well as what that means for economic democracy overall. Along the way, they challenge the idea that the “business case” and “values case” for employee ownership are in tension, arguing that the two reinforce each other. It’s a case for keeping both at the center as employee ownership continues to grow.

In this conversation from the 2026 Employee Ownership Ideas Forum, panelists discuss how a strong internal culture of ownership protects the dignity of work in an automated age and serves as a powerful competitive advantage, while also exploring the changes required to shift our economy towards a new understanding of ownership and profit distribution.
